Well, here it is . . . the grape that changed my life: Gewürztraminer.
“Huh?” you say. Read on my dear oenophiles.
It was at my very first wine class in NYC and I wasn’t sure what to expect. Gewürztraminer was in our white wine lineup. I had never heard of it. I took one sip and thought “Wow.” I had no idea wine could be so interesting, so alive. I remember taking the 2-hour train ride home, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I needed to know everything about this grape, and the others we had tasted. I finally found something that inspired me, and from that sensory moment on, I knew I was destined to work with wine. But on that morning, as my train was pulling out of Grand Central Station, Gewürztraminer, in particular, had me at hello.
Every so often I pick up a bottle of Gewürztraminer to reminisce. Recently, I chose a bottle of @domainemeyerfonne 2017 Reserve and it brought me right back.
This highly aromatic, golden beauty had peony, roses, lychees and yellow apple on the nose. On the palate, I got extra-ripe peaches, lanolin, sunflowers, honey with a mineral finish. It had a medium acidity but still remained pretty sweet until the end. This would pair deliciously with bleu cheese or some spicy food. Loved it.
